365 Daily Bird Lists (January 3rd 2019 – January 2nd 2020) is a painting series which presents a year-long archive of every bird perceived by the artist. These daily sightings and listenings represent a record of Fernando do Campo’s everyday multispecies encounters in our urban spaces. As is common in his painting practice in recent years, these daily records produce a dataset and logic for the artist’s constantly shifting approaches to painting. While some paintings appear as pure abstract compositions of vibrant colours and pattens, others contain partial listings of sighted birds. Naming is associated with the idea of classification and ordering. In recording only the first word of each bird species’ name, do Campo presents an obstacle and interruption to the established frames we rely on to reduce and understand non-human companions, and holds a critical mirror up to it.
