Fernando do Campo (b. Mar del Plata, 1987) is an Argentinean-Australian artist based between Brisbane and Sydney. Since 2015 he also produces work as the HSSH (House Sparrow Society for Humans).
Fernando’s practice engages the histories of non-human species via anthropomorphism, speculative fiction, autobiography, fieldwork and archival research to produce multi-disciplinary exhibitions and projects. The global south and the legacies of colonialism, nationalism, modernism and migration that hold animal and plant narratives are a focus for his research and material studio explorations.
Fernando has presented work internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include: Lilac Hour, Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert at Melbourne Art Fair, 2025; Siblings, Ararat Gallery TAMA (Textile Art Museum Australia) 2025; Capricornian Minotaurs and Where To Find Them, Rockhampton Museum of Art, 2024; and his solo national touring exhibition To companion a companion, presented by Contemporary Art Tasmania, Hobart, UNSW Galleries Sydney and PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Art) across 2021-22. In 2025 Fernando is presenting two international projects that focus on the history and affect of house sparrows in the Americas; a performance lecture to be presented with the Barnett Newman Foundation, New York, and a large-scale textiles commission for the Museo MAR (Museo de Arte Contemporanéo Provincial de Buenos Aires), as part of BIENALSUR 2025, the fifth edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South. Fernando’s work is help in private and public collections internationally.
Fernando has received awards from the Australian Regional Arts Fund, Arts Tasmania, Ian Potter Cultural Trust, Creative Australia, NAVA (National Association Visual Arts), and The New School. Fernando is a Sir General John Monash Foundation Scholar, the first artist to ever receive this award, which saw him complete an MFA at Parsons School of Design, The New School, New York. In 2022 he also completed his PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) at MADA, Monash University. He has undertaken residencies at the Chelsea Westminster Hospital, London; Cite International des Arts, Paris; BMUKK, Austrian Ministry of Culture, Vienna; and State Library of New South Wales and Taronga Zoo. Fernando is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at UNSW Art & Design, Sydney.
